The online modules are designed to suit those who are already working as English teachers. You can fit your distance study around your work schedule. If you are interested in a face-to-face or online blended Delta, then you can see the full list of dates and locations on our Delta Calendar.

What is the Delta Course?

The Delta is a level 7 qualification and is the most prestigious TEFL diploma in the world as it is accredited by University of Cambridge.

The Cambridge Delta is designed for ESL teachers with at least 2 years’ experience to a variety of ages and levels. It is a flexible qualification which you can work on at your own pace. The aim of the course is to enhance your pre-existing skills, help your professional development and to give you further knowledge to fine tune your teaching techniques.

The Delta qualification will open doors to better paid jobs, such as working as a Principal, Director of Studies or, ultimately, becoming a teacher trainer yourself.

The Delta is split into three modules, which can be taken as stand-alone qualifications, each giving you a certificate from Cambridge. When you complete all three, you will receive an overarching certificate. They can be taken in any order, with any provider, online or face-to-face, whatever suits you best, this will not affect your qualification.

The outline of each Delta module is explained below.

Online Delta Module 1

The Delta module 1 online focuses on ‘Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching’. It is an exam based module, with the online course helping to prepare you. The written exam runs twice a year, in June and in December. You do not need to visit your Delta Online training provider, you can take the test at your local Cambridge accredited exam centre, which are situated across the globe. Once you have applied for the course, the Delta tutors will be able to assist you in finding a convenient exam centre.

Online Delta Module 2

The focus of Delta Online Module 2 is ‘Developing Professional Practice’. This course is a practical based module, where your lesson planning and teaching practice will be assessed. This course can still be taken from a distance online with a Delta Main Course Tutor, but you will also have a local Delta tutor, chosen by you, who could be a Director of Studies at your school, or other Delta approved trainer. An external Cambridge Assessor will come to your school to view your final lesson. The tutors at your chosen Delta training centre will give you all the information you need once you have applied.

Online Delta Module 3

The Delta Module 3 Online course is an assignment based module. The submission dates are twice a year, in June and December and can also be made online. You can choose between two options, either ‘Extending Practice and ELT Specialism’ or ‘English Language Teaching Management’. If you complete all three Delta Modules, you will receive an overarching certificate from Cambridge University.

Delta Entry Requirements

The Delta modules are designed for experience TEFL teachers wanting to enhance their career with a view to improving techniques and propelling themselves into higher paid jobs.

The Cambridge Delta is open non-native speakers of native speaker proficiency in all areas, including reading, writing and speaking.

Your ability to take the Delta will be assessed by a Delta tutor and you will be accepted if they believe you are likely to be successful in completing the course.

Cambridge guidelines say that applicants should:

  • have at least two years’ experience of teaching English
  • have experience of teaching English to a variety of levels and ages
  • have an initial EFL teaching qualification (i.e. CELTA, Trinity Cert TESOL or other 120 hour TEFL equivalent)
  • have a near native level of English (such as C2, CPE or IELTS 8+)

Candidates may sometimes still be accepted if they do not quite meet these requirements, as long as they can demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to successfully complete the Delta module. If you are unsure, you can take the Delta Eligibility Test. Alternatively, you can apply for an online Delta module for free and the tutors will give you feedback based on your tasks, to assess your capability.

Why take the Online Delta Modules?

If you are already a EFL teacher, the Delta is a way to develop your pre-existing skills and to deepen your knowledge and understanding. The CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL are great ways to introduce you to the ESL industry, but some teachers find that over time, they pick up bad habits, or become stunted in their professional development. Teachers with the equivalent of at least 2 years’ experience teaching English to a variety of levels and ages can apply to take the Delta, provided that they have at least a C2 (near-native) level of English.

The Delta modules can open doors to higher paid jobs and more senior EFL role. Graduates often find themselves progressing into roles such as Directors of Studies, Teacher Trainers, Principals, speakers or even Teacher Trainers.

The Delta online modules are convenient for ESOL teachers who are unable to travel to a Delta training centre, due to work commitments, family, location or other factors. The fact that the courses can often be taken at your own pace, from home, means that it can fit around busy work/life responsibilities.

No matter which format you decide to take the Delta in, whether it be online, online-blended or face-to-face, the certificate you receive from Cambridge University will remain the exactly the same. The online courses are designed so that all the same knowledge and practice is involved, it is just delivered in a different way. Your chances of finding are exactly the same, regardless of the format.

The Cambridge Delta modules are made to add to your previous experience as a EFL teacher, give you the chance to progress to a higher position and to make you even more attractive to potential employers.
